love bugs are in the air...

and all over my car. the turnpike was pretty miserable with them. miserable. i made the mistake of thinking my windshield wipers might help remove some of them, but pretty much all it did was make the situation worse. so from the first service plaza on the turnpike to yeehaw junction, my visibility was nil.

all the motorists bonded at the two gas stations in yeehaw junction. a friendly lady gave up her windshield scraper to me (her husband was already using one) and offered me some tips on getting the bugs off. (use lots of water, which helped).

it's demoralizing though to get a clear view only to get a few seconds further down the road and have a bunch more bugs splatter their way onto the window.

i don't think they were as bad on the way back. i stopped in okeechobee for gas and the things were all over the gas station. ugh. now that i'm back in orlando, i notice the cars around here do not have the lovely love bug look that i'm currently sporting.

as i was entering orlando, i heard on the radio some talk about the urban legends surrounding love bugs. the one i was familiar with was that UF had engineered them to control the mosquito population but that things got out of hand. a myth i hadn't heard was that the love bug season can predict what we can expect during hurricane season. i hope, like the UF rumor, that that's false. otherwise we are in for it.

my friend's husband is from michigan and he had never experienced love bugs before. he was convinced he'd been bit by one until my friend explained that they don't bite. they just sort of fly and drift around. and don't dodge cars. can you imagine if they did bite? they could take over the world.

and apparently i have 48 hours to get the love bugs cleaned off my car before they damage the paint. something about the acid in their bodies.

all i need is a good pressure cleaner and chisel and i'll be set.

we're an army

I know everyone is very concerned, rest assured the green cheetos have had no ill effect on me.

I used technorati to see if any other bloggers had experienced the green cheetos and to my delight there are a few:

Beware the Cheetos
bbq grill and cheetos
Misc. Linky Love

And apparently, someone is
selling them on eBay. That would have never ocurred to me. I suppose there are some super Shrek fans out there who would really appreciate a tongue-turn-green bag 'o baked cheetos.

(If only we could sneak Chris's green cheetos photos into the auction, that'd boost sales).

Btw, for interested parties (with keen eyesight):

famous lefties

Er, nice to see Jack the Ripper make it into the top terms associated with "left-handedness". Good Grokkin'.

Edited to add:
A long time ago when I initially registered with Bloglines, I ran into some error messages and thought my subscriptions didn't go through. I logged in today and saw that they actually had gone through! Cool. It's nice to have all the feeds grouped together like that. In the past I've used My Yahoo.

I really like how browsers these days pretty much come standard with RSS seeking capabilities so you can subscribe easily right from your browser window.

hazy shade of spring

Creating a blog through Blogger was very nice and simple. They don't lie about the Three Steps.

I think blogs are a great way to get information out to patrons and at the same time give them an easy avenue to offer feedback and input through comments.

I was talking with someone a few weeks ago who had just flown down from D.C. on Southwestern and she was telling me that some animals from Sea World were on her flight. They were in the first 7 or 8 rows of the passenger area and inside special cages that fit into the seats. She said that during the flight, the Sea World folk got on the PA system and told everyone about the animals. (The penguin was sedated.) Southwestern does seem to be doing things a bit differently.

Forgot to add that one of my favorite blogs to check in on is tales from the liberry. quite a humorous take on life in a rural library. I prefer to catch up with it through its RSS feed.
